This is exactly what the Harvest Festival is about: gratitude for what nature has produced, for the food grown in fields and meadows, and for the work of all the people behind it.
Particularly in the Salzburg region, where agriculture and rural life have been closely linked to the landscape for generations, this custom still holds special significance today. Harvest Festival is far more than just a celebration. It is a piece of living tradition and a conscious reminder that a good harvest and sufficient food are not to be taken for granted.
Why do we celebrate the Harvest Festival?
The roots of the Harvest Festival reach far back. Even before Christianity, people celebrated festivals and rituals to give thanks for a successful harvest. In the Roman Catholic Church, the Harvest Festival has been documented since the 3rd century. There is still no uniform date today, as the harvest is gathered at different times depending on the region and climate. In Austria, many harvest festivals traditionally take place at the end of September or in October.
To this day, the gifts of nature remain the focus. Churches are decorated with grain, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and bread. The artistically woven harvest crowns are particularly impressive. They symbolize the fruits of the earth and gratitude for the gathered harvest.
In the Salzburg region, the Harvest Festival is also closely linked to community and rural customs. Music, traditional costumes, craftsmanship, and regional products turn the church festival into a shared experience for the entire village in many places.
Grand Harvest Parade in Bad Hofgastein
This tradition becomes particularly impressive during the grand harvest parade in Bad Hofgastein. On Sunday, September 27, 2026, starting at 9:00 AM, the center of Bad Hofgastein transforms into a stage for living customs. The grand parade is organized by the Gastein Landjugend (Rural Youth Association) and takes place every two years, alternating between Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein.
Preparations begin days in advance. Tractors and festival floats are lovingly decorated, animals are groomed, and traditional displays are prepared. On the day of the festival, the elaborately designed floats finally move through the village center accompanied by plenty of music. On them, farming families showcase old crafts and provide insight into traditions that have shaped life in the Gastein Valley for generations. Handcrafted items are presented, regional specialties are a must, and one or two fine spirits can be tasted at the schnapps distiller’s stall.
Hundreds of visitors line the streets of Bad Hofgastein. People watch, marvel, play music, and celebrate together. After the parade, the day draws to a close at the large harvest festival with music and dancing.
