At our design hotel DAS.GOLDBERG, sustainability is not a trend, but a lived philosophy. Amidst nature, high above the Gastein Valley, we are aware: What we take from the earth should be in balance with what we give back to it. Whether it’s cuisine, architecture, or energy: for us, respectful interaction with nature and people is central.
Cuisine with Provenance – Regional, seasonal, honest
What is served should not only taste good, but also reflect responsibility. Therefore, we rely on short transport routes and work closely with regional producers. Part of our meat comes directly from the farm in Großarl; the fish comes either from our own pond or from Hans Moser at Schmaranzgut. Yogurt, butter, eggs, and honey are supplied by our neighbors. For example, our caretaker Toni, who is not only skilled in crafts but also a passionate beekeeper.
Fruits and vegetables come – depending on the season – from Austria. In winter, we utilize every resource to still remain regional. We largely forgo exotic products. We only make an exception for oranges, pineapples, or melons, because sometimes a touch of distant lands is welcome. We bake our own bread in the evenings, Chef Georg Seer smokes bacon according to old tradition, jams and syrups come from our own production, as does the coffee from our in-house roastery.
Architecture, Built from Nature
Our materials tell stories: wood, loden, leather, wool, stone – genuine natural materials that radiate warmth and security. The wellness area is made from local Swiss pine; the Goldstollen was built with 420 tons of real rock, modeled after the Gastein Healing Caves. Everything exudes naturalness and thus also a feeling of reconnection with nature.
Energy with Foresight: Green in Thought, Sustainable in Action
Energy consumption? We rethink it holistically. With over 6,500 meters of deep drilling, a photovoltaic system with 110 kW output, a pellet heating system, geothermal energy, and a lighting control system that adapts to daylight. This way, we cool the house in summer with geothermal energy and heat it naturally in winter. With our intelligent ASKI system, we analyze energy consumption in real time and connect all energy sources and consumers in the house. This way, we optimize the entire energy flow: for maximum efficiency with minimal resource use.
Conscious Daily Life
For us, sustainability does not end in the technical room. It begins with the small things:
- Cosmetic products from Team Dr. Joseph: Natural cosmetics from South Tyrol with real herbs
- Refillable dispensers in the rooms instead of single-use
- Digital guest folder instead of paper
- Ballpoint pens made from wheat straw, brochures on natural paper
- Handmade candles from soy wax
- Wooden hearts and hand-turned spheres from the neighborhood
Mobility Rethought: Electric on the Go
Our guests can access modern mobility solutions: E-bikes, e-scooters, and an Audi e-tron are available. For employees, there is a shuttle system and an e-scooter for free use.
